‘The aim of all life is death...inanimate things existed before living ones’ (Freud 1920)

The concept behind the piece comes from Freud's theory of our life and death drives (Eros and Thanatos) - that the aim of life is death. The two help define each other in more ways than just being extremities of life. Freud's theory outlines that the ultimate experience of pleasure (life) is zero stimulus. Where in all the chaos that exists in this world, humans aim for a sense of calm, and in this sense, 'death'.

I found an interesting relation between this theory and the myth of Icarus. That the act of Icarus falling to his death portrayed Freud's theory - where what is defined as living and dying, the literal and theoretical becomes one.
